Every night I open up my Netflix app and swipe aimlessly for about half an hour, trying to pick something good to watch, until finally giving up. Yes, I give up, but I must admit that scrolling around for half an hour is also quite relaxing. I get to find titles I never would have come up upon had I just picked my straight go to movie or show.

The other day, the newly released, LeBron produced movie called Rez Ball came up. I was so excited because I hadn’t heard of the book title being made into a movie. I knew about the book, and I was beyond excited when it came to print. With that being said, I recommend reading the book and them watching the movie.

The story is about Tre Brun, and how he overcomes loss and grief by discovering a love for basketball. He plays on Red Lake Reservation High school team, representing his Ojibwe reservation, can he lead his team to state? Or will the reminder of the loss of his brother Jaxon weigh too heavy. I highly recommend it.

Here are some other titles I recommend for any sports fanatic out there. These titles are geared for Young adult and the last one (We are big time) is a children’s graphic novel.

Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez (Y MEND)

A story about an amazingly talented futbol(soccer) player in Argentina. Camilla Hassan wants to play professionally but her parents have different plans and expectations for her. She dreams of soccer, will her parents allow her to play?

When it all syncs up by Maya Ameyaw (Y AMEY)

A black teen ballet dancer faces discrimination when trying to place into a ballet school. Aisha faces questions about friendship, her ballet future, and her romantic interest. Will she find the strength she needs to follow her dream and trust her friends?

We are big time by Hena Kahn (X GRAPHIC KHAN)

Inspired by Milwaukee’s own Salaam School Varsity Basketball team, this story follows Aliya as she joins an all-girls hijabi wearing team. It’s a wonderful coming of age story, exploring culture, family, and teamwork.
